I've been through times of ridicule, times of being proud to be Cajun, and times when I saw some of my people being proud to be called silly names like Coon Ass. I guess that most of them figured that , if nothing else, at least it was some form of recognition. I never did like that. I found it to be an embarrassment. After all, who wants to be called the rear end of a raccoon.
I've been punished for speaking French at school, My wife Deanna Landry was ridiculed made fun of and insulted being told that she was too stupid to speak English. She was told this by a teacher, not much of a teacher, at least that's what I always thought. The teacher, no matter how good he was at teaching was too stupid to talk French and made a jackass of himself by being cruel to my wife and hundreds of others like her .
When I began first grade I couldn't speak a word of English. My mom had taught me how to count up to ten in English, I could say a few words in English but basically my vocabulary consisted of a broken English combined with French. When I went to school it was boring English all day long and when I left school, in the late afternoon, I went home and I walked into a world where it was French only. I really preferred this French-only world. The French only was a place where I was loved and cared for and all I ever met was harshness and things I didn't want to do at the hands of the English-speaking Americans.
I find it strange that the English Americans went through so much trouble to get rid of our language and now they're trying so hard to replace our language, that they the English-speaking Americans destroyed, and trying so hard to replace it with a language that is not ours.
I've seen other forms of stupidity, ignorance, lack of knowledge or whatever you want to call it from teachers, even in our modern day society. I've conversed with so-called French teachers in class at the high school who somehow figured that Cajun French is a foreign language. I quickly pointed out to this self-proclaimed instructor, that was low on knowledge of the Cajun Culture, that French is not a foreign language. "We were speaking French, right here in Louisiana, before it became the United States," I told her and then added, "so how do you figure that's foreign, if anything its the English that are foreign to this modern United States." But she was correct in one way, the French they teach in high school is a foreign language, to us the Cajun People, because it's not the Cajun French that I spoke as a child. It's because of that I've decided to offer this course in Cajun French.
I am duly trained in French. I've taken four-years of French at high school and four years at college but I do want to stress that it is not Parisian French that I teach, it is the French of the Cajun people.
